Thank you for your interest in joining our team of medical car service volunteer drivers. Please find below some information on the role and how to apply. We hope to hear from you soon and please do ask if you have any questions.
What is the medical car service?
Volunteers use their own vehicles to transport local elderly passengers to their medical appointments, both within Sidmouth and further afield. Clients ring our transport office, which is open weekdays 9am – 11am to request a journey and the team of transport co-ordinators arranges this with our pool of drivers.
Our current drivers enjoy many varied chats with the clients, and the service is much appreciated by those who use it.
Clients pay a set rate for their journeys which covers the costs of organising the transport and paying the mileage expenses to the driver. We do not make a profit from the monies received.
What expenses do I get paid?
If you live within the Sid Valley, you get paid mileage from when you leave your house to when you return. If you live outside of the Sid Valley, you can claim expenses from when you reach the edge of the Sid Valley boundary – please speak to us about this. At the beginning of the month, you bring in your claim form for the previous month and you will be paid your expenses by bank transfer.
Mileage is paid at the current government rate, which is:
45 pence per mile with no passengers
50 pence per mile with passenger
When will I work?
You can pick your own hours and do as many or as few drives as you wish. You can choose whether to take clients just to local appointments, to those further afield such as in Exeter, or both. You can notify us of the days you are available to volunteer and we will offer you drives as they come in. You then choose whether to accept it.
What are the requirements to join?
You will need your own vehicle which is to be kept clean and roadworthy, and you must notify your insurance company. Due to the nature of the role, a DBS check will be carried out on applicants.
